Hearing Aids

The accurate fitting of hearing aids is only one part of the process. Hearing rehabilitation (getting used to hearing again) is a complex process requiring specialised audiological counselling and support. Your audiologist will work with you through your personal hearing program over the first 12 months to ensure successful hearing outcomes. We recommend to all our clients a full audiological rehabilitation service with their hearing aid purchase. The following is included in the price of your hearing aids:

  1. 1. The hearing rehabilitation plan
    • Together we develop a number of personalised listening and communication goals for your hearing rehabilitation plan
    • We help you select the hearing aids that can best meet your listening and communication goals and your budget
    • The more advanced the hearing aid technology the higher the price, however outcomes will be better in more demanding listening situations
  2. 2. The fitting of the aids
    • Hearing aids are fittied to your audiological profile to ensure the best sound quality and performance
    • The hearing aids are also fitted for physical comfort and to be as cosmetically appealing as possible
  3. 3. Verification of the acoustic performance of the aids
    • Verification testing ensures that the amplification you receive in your ear canal is matched to the hearing prescription. The ear canal size and shape impact the acoustics and the sound you receive from the hearing aids and we test to ensure that you are getting the required audibility of speech sounds
  4. 4. A custom-made ear mould or ear tips
    • Custom-made ear mould or ear tips may be required for aids to fit comfortably and securely in your ear and to achieve the acoustical performance required of the aids
  5. 5. Fine-tuning the settings of aids to obtain the best hearing outcomes possible for you
    • Over the first few weeks you will need to acclimatise to hearing again and your audiologist will adjust the aids and counsel you through the acclimatisation process
  6. 6. Any further adjustments of the hearing aids within 12 months from the date of fitting
    • Your preferences for sounds or your listening and communication needs may change with time and these adjustments are included in the price
  7. 7. Instructions and practice on using the hearing aids properly
    • Proper insertion of the aids into your ear canal is critical to achieving the required acoustic performance of the aids
  8. 8. Instructions on care and maintenance
    • Hearing aids are placed in/on ears that may be moist (due to sweating) or have ear wax or both. Maintenance of the aids is vital to ensure their optimal performance and prevent wax blockages
  9. 9. 3 years manufacturer’s warranty
  10. 10. 60 days return option (a service fee applies)
  11. 11. Disposable batteries for 12 months*

*Assuming standard battery use ie maximum of 1 battery per aid per week. Please note that large amounts of streaming music, phone audio will consume more batteries and this is not included. Applies to disposable batteries only, rechargeable batteries not included.

The price of hearing aids will depend on the hearing aid’s performance. The performance is determined by the technology in the aids, which in turn defines how well they will perform in different situations.

Melbourne Audiology Centre offers hearing aids at 4 prices/performance levels:

  • Premium
  • Advanced
  • Value
  • Economy

Premium level hearing aids provide better performance in more demanding listening situations such as restaurants, clubs or parties. In consultation with one of our audiologists, you will find the best hearing aid solution for your lifestyle needs and for your budget. Your choice of hearing aids will depend on the situations where you would like to hear better i.e. your lifestyle. For example, if you have a very social lifestyle and need to hear in lots of complex noisy environments, a premium hearing aid will better meet your needs. Please make an appointment for a hearing aid consultation with one of our audiologists.

Your audiologist has knowledge of all the latest hearing aids and their features and benefits. They know about the complexities of the auditory (hearing) system in general and the status of your individual hearing in particular. They will listen to your needs and combined with their expertise, will help you to select the best hearing aids. Considerations will be given to:

  1. 1. Your hearing
    • The degree and type of the hearing loss in each ear
    • Speech discrimination tests results
  2. 2. Your ear canal size and shape
    • This will be particularly relevant for very small IIC (invisible in the canal) hearing instruments
  3. 3. Your communication needs and lifestyle
    • What you need to hear and situations where you need to hear better
  4. 4. Your preferences
    • What style of hearing aid you would prefer; invisible, easy to manage, long battery life
    • The importance to you of your listening experience with the aids
  5. 5. Your budget
    • How much you wish to invest in your hearing

Once the aids are selected, they will be accurately fitted and fine-tuned to your personal needs. When fitted, your audiologist will assist you through the acclimatisation process so you are able to use your hearing aids every day.
