Step 1: Assessment
Your audiologist will ask you about; your ear history, ear health, general health and any contraindications to ear wax removal. Before commencing, your audiologist will conduct a thorough inspection of your ear canal using the binocular microscope and assess the situation. They will advise you of the next steps. You will need to keep you head still during the whole ear wax removal procedure.
Step 2: Ear wax removal via micro-suction
A small suction tube attached to a suction machine is used to remove the ear wax from your ear canal. This works a little bit like a vacuum cleaner. You will need to keep your head still during the whole ear wax removal procedure.
Step 3: Ear wax removal using other techniques
Alternative procedures may be implemented by your audiologist if micro-suction proves unsuitable for the removal of earwax or other foreign bodies from your ear. One alternative could be the utilisation of specifically designed micro ear wax loops or forceps. These instruments, built for precision, are utilized for intricate tasks. Your audiologist will cautiously introduce the loop or forceps into the ear canal, ensuring that no harm comes to the fragile internal structures. Once correctly positioned, the instrument is adopted to softly seize and remove the wax or any other object that might be stuck in your ear. Despite its brisk nature, this procedure is carried out with great care to ensure your safety and comfort.
Step 4: If all wax cannot be removed
Removing earwax in a single visit is often the norm; however, there are conditions that make this unattainable, creating a need for a future appointment. Some scenarios making it unachievable to eliminate wax during the visit include:
- Evidence of wax latching onto hair and skin inside the ear canal
- Presence of old wax hardened due to long periods and layered deeply
- The omission of the prescribed pre-appointment wax softener drops, culminating in wax too rigid to extract

Ear Wax and Symptoms of Wax Blockage
Earwax, scientifically referred to as cerumen, is a natural substance secreted by special glands located in the external part of the ear canal. It plays a critical role in ear protection, safeguarding it from potential harm and infections. The ear canal skin is coated by cerumen that acts as a dust trap for miscellaneous small particles as well as a water-resistant layer. It is perfectly normal for a minimal amount of wax to build up in the ear and be naturally removed from the ear canal through an organic skin migration process that moves outwards from the ear.
In a normal process, the skin of the ear canal moves outwards directionally from the eardrum to the opening of the ear canal, concurrently flushing out earwax along with any other trapped debris. This may include dead skin cells, dust particles, and a range of other microscopic substances.

What is the cost?
Our ear wax removal service is priced at $130, which covers treatment for both ears. We provide a discount of 10% for individuals who possess a senior or pensioner card. Please note, this service does not qualify for a Medicare refund.
How long does it take?
This will depend on how deep in the ear canal the wax is located, how much there is and how hard the wax is. Your appointment is for 30min. Occasionally, a second appointment may be required if the wax is deep in the ear canal, if the wax is hard or if you didn’t use wax softener to soften the wax prior to your appointment.
Is it painful?
Normally, you won’t feel a thing during the process, but in a few cases, there might be slight discomfort if the earwax is deeply embedded or impacted. Should any discomfort arise, the process will be ceased right away. In some instances, especially with deep-seated or hard wax, it might be necessary to schedule another appointment to ensure a safe and pain-free extraction. Following your procedure, your healthcare provider will provide further instructions.
Can children have this procedure?
Yes, children over 10 years can have the procedure; however they must be able to keep their head still.
