Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a unique type of hearing loss. Loud noise affects a particular high frequency part of the cochlear (inner ear) and can cause damage to both the sensory hair cells of the cochlear and the auditory nerves of the ear. Recent research indicates that exposure to loud noise can cause damage to the auditory nerves well before a hearing loss is identified on the hearing test; this is called ‘hidden hearing loss’.
