Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a unique type of hearing loss.  Loud noise affects a particular high frequency part of the cochlear (inner ear) and can cause damage to both the sensory hair cells of the cochlear and the auditory nerves of the ear.  Recent research indicates that exposure to loud noise can cause damage to the auditory nerves well before a hearing loss is identified on the hearing test; this is called ‘hidden hearing loss’.

Damage to auditory hair cells and nerve cells from exposure to loud noise such as blasts from bombs and firearms may be reversible according to a study by researchers at Stanford University of Medicine.
