How long does an ear wax removal procedure take and is it painful?
We will need to assess the solidity and quantity of your ear wax as well as its depth in the ear canal to determine the procedure to follow. We have set aside 30 minutes for your consultation. In some instances, it becomes necessary to schedule a secondary consultation, in scenarios where the wax lies deep within the ear canal, when the wax is particularly hardened, or when there has been no pre-treatment with a wax-softening agent before your visit.
The procedure is generally without discomfort although if the wax is deep-seated and impacted, some individuals might experience some unease. The process will be immediately halted if it turns unbearable. If the wax is deeply lodged or impacted, there may be a need for a follow-up appointment to ensure a safe, pain-free extraction. Your medical practitioner will guide you regarding the next steps.

One such method involves the use of specialised micro ear wax loops or forceps. These are highly precise instruments crafted for delicate tasks. The audiologist carefully inserts the loop or forceps into the ear canal, making sure to avoid damage to the sensitive internal structures. Once in position, the tool is used to gently grasp and extract the wax or any foreign material that may be lodged in your ear. This procedure is typically quick, but it’s performed with utmost caution to ensure your comfort and well-being.
Step 4: If all wax cannot be removed
In most cases wax can be entirely removed during the appointment; however there are instances where this is not possible and a subsequent appointment is necessary. Some of the main reasons that wax is not able to be removed during the appointment include: the wax has adhered to hair and/or skin within the ear canal, wax has been present for some time and has accumulated in layers that are quite deep and hard, wax spray/drops were not used for the full 3-4 days prior to the appointment and the wax is too hard to remove.
