Your Audiology Questions Answered
How do I find hearing aids near Footscray that are right for me?
Finding the right hearing aids for you is a personal journey. Several factors will come into play, such as the aesthetics and comfort of the hearing aids, sound quality, user-friendliness, and their effectiveness in enhancing hearing in noisy environments. It’s also important to consider your budget and eligibility, including any potential benefits from the Australian Government Hearing Services Program (subject to certain conditions).
Who can hearing aids benefit?
Hearing aids may benefit people of all ages who experience hearing loss. Whether a person’s hearing loss is mild or severe, hearing aids aim to improve communication, enhance their quality of life, and increase their engagement with the world.
Are hearing aids available on Medicare in Footscray?
Although Medicare does not provide coverage for hearing aids, the Hearing Services Program (HSP) by the Australian Government may provide them to eligible individuals.
Who is eligible for subsidised hearing aids and hearing tests?
Thanks to the Commonwealth Hearing Services Program (HSP), eligible pensioners and clients of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) have the chance to benefit from complimentary or reduced-cost hearing aids and services. Providers accredited under the HSP have demonstrated excellence and consistency through a stringent and ongoing accreditation process. This ensures clients receive top-notch care.
Take advantage of our subsidised hearing tests if you’re above 50 years old at all our medical centers. Also, those receiving pensions, ex-servicemen, and others who qualify under the Government’s Hearing Services Program could be eligible for a subsidized hearing test too. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need more clarity about your eligibility.
Do I need a GP referral for a hearing test?
It’s not required to obtain a GP’s referral in order to undergo a hearing test administered by an audiologist.
When should you get your hearing checked?
Most healthcare practitioners suggest that individuals should get a hearing evaluation once they reach the age of 65. However, it’s not uncommon for those below 65 to also undergo hearing assessments as part of routine health checks.
How much does it cost to get a hearing test or ear wax removal near Footscray?
If you’re paying the total fee out of pocket, expect to pay $185 for a hearing exam. With a referral from a General Practitioner, you might be eligible for Medicare rebates at the Melbourne Audiology Centre. Reach out to us for further details.
Our ear wax removal service is priced at $130, which covers treatment for both ears. We provide a discount of 10% for individuals who possess a senior or pensioner card. Please note, this service does not qualify for a Medicare refund.
How long does an ear wax removal procedure take and is it painful?
This will depend on how deep in the ear canal the wax is located, how much there is and how hard the wax is. Your appointment is for 30min. Occasionally, a second appointment may be required if the wax is deep in the ear canal, if the wax is hard or if you didn’t use wax softener to soften the wax prior to your appointment.
Generally it is painless, however some people may experience some discomfort especially if the wax is impacted and deep in the ear canal. If it does become uncomfortable, the procedure will be stopped immediately. A subsequent appointment may be recommended in order to safely and painlessly remove deep or impacted wax. You clinician will advise you on what to do next.

Step 1: Assessment
Your audiologist will ask you about; your ear history, ear health, general health and any contraindications to ear wax removal. Before commencing, your audiologist will conduct a thorough inspection of your ear canal using the binocular microscope and assess the situation. They will advise you of the next steps. You will need to keep you head still during the whole ear wax removal procedure.
Step 2: Ear wax removal via micro-suction
The procedure for removing earwax involves a diminutive suction tube that’s connected to a suction device, functioning similarly to an ordinary vacuum cleaner. For the successful execution of the earwax extraction, it is vital to maintain a steady head position throughout the process.
Step 3: Ear wax removal using other techniques
Alternative procedures may be implemented by your audiologist if micro-suction proves unsuitable for the removal of earwax or other foreign bodies from your ear. One alternative could be the utilisation of specifically designed micro ear wax loops or forceps. These instruments, built for precision, are utilized for intricate tasks. Your audiologist will cautiously introduce the loop or forceps into the ear canal, ensuring that no harm comes to the fragile internal structures. Once correctly positioned, the instrument is adopted to softly seize and remove the wax or any other object that might be stuck in your ear. Despite its brisk nature, this procedure is carried out with great care to ensure your safety and comfort.
Step 4: If all wax cannot be removed
Ordinarily, earwax can be completely cleared out within a single session; however, circumstances wherein this can’t be achieved do occur, requiring an additional visit. Most often the inability to clear out the wax within a single session can be attributed to the following circumstances: the earwax has clung onto hairs and/or ear canal skin, the earwax is old and has built up thick stubborn layers over time, the recommended wax softening drops were not diligently applied in the 3-4 days leading up to the visit, impeding wax extraction due to hardness.
Should there be a need for a follow-up visit, your health practitioner will brief you accordingly.
